Knox, PA — just a 20-25 minute drive from Oil City and Franklin
Other than having a great Farmers Market every Friday in the Community Park from 4pm to 7pm did you know that Knox is known as the “Horsethief Capital of the World”? It gained this reputation through the nefarious doings of Sebastian “Boss” Buck who was the most notorious horse thief in US history. He and his gang continuously moved a string of stolen horses along a trail from Kentucky to Maine. While Boss Buck spent much of his time riding this trail, his residence and headquarters was reputedly located somewhere near Knox.
Every year Knox has a weeklong festival called the “Horsethief Days Celebration“. Highlights of the celebration include a car cruise, a main street parade, local bands with a variety of music from Christian Rock to Country, dances, sidewalk sales, and lots of good food and refreshments. A softball tournament, a community picnic & vesper service will kick off the celebration.
2010 Horsethief Days are currently being planned for August 21, 22, 25, 26, 27, and 28th.
Make sure you stop by the Farmer’s Market on Friday, August 20th for some great locally grown produce and handmade goodies.
You’ll find homemade strawberry pies & goats milk fudge from Larry at Curran Acres, berry and white chocolate scones (my personal favorite), fresh mango, pineapple and tomato salsa from Marnie at Some Like It Hot (the mango salsa is delicious on grilled chicken and pork tenderloin!). For the cooks, check out the great dried herb mixes from Kathy of The Herb Shed, hot pickled bologna, hamburg, steaks and roasts from Tom at McCoy Farms — if you’re hungry he’ll even cook you a delicious juicy hamburg on his grill. If you’re looking for quality handcrafted items see Bonnie of Bonnie’s Beads,
other than her beaded jewelry she also makes whimsical bird seed shaped eggs, squirrels and stars to hang in your trees for your fine feathered friends (she doesn’t use suet so they won’t get rancid in the heat). Also, handmade hardwood pepper and salt grinders, beautiful, one of a kind and reasonably priced (around $18 each).
